Fortune Tellers

Fortune Tellers propose un ensemble d'outils divinatoires fictifs sous la forme d'un coin-coin de bronze et de quatre biscuits de fortune en aluminium. S'ils sont ni comestibles ni faits de papier, ils ressemblent tout de même à ce qu'ils sont censés imiter, nous renvoyant à des souvenirs d'enfance, à une croyance magique ou au simple frisson d'en craquer un à la fin d'un repas au restaurant; pas tant pour son goût, mais pour ce que son petit papier aura à nous dire. C'est alors que s'impose la matérialité de ces pièces; jamais nous ne pourrons jouer avec ce lourd coin-coin et ces biscuits de fortune ne pourront jamais être ouverts. Ils demeurent statiques, incapables de révéler leur secret, si secret il y a. En ce sens, quoique brillants et attrayants, les soi-disant diseurs de bonne aventure se montrent incapables de prédire l'avenir, nous confrontant à la fin de l'enfance, à ce moment où nous avons cessé de croire en la magie.

Fortune Tellers is proposing a set of fictitious divinatory devices in the form of a bronze cootie catcher and four aluminum fortune cookies. If not edible or made out of paper, they still resemble what they are meant to imitate, sending us back to childhood memories, to a magic belief or to the simple thrill of cracking one at the end of a meal at the restaurant; not so much for the taste of it, but for what its little paper has to say. This is where the materiality of these pieces comes into place; this heavy cootie catcher is incapable of being played and these fortune cookies will never be cracked open. They remain static, unable of revealing their secret, if secret there is. In that sense, although shiny and attracting, the so called Fortune Tellers reveal themselves incapable of fortune telling, confronting us to the end of childhood, to this moment we stopped believing in magic.
